Mauricio Pochettino with an amazing gesture to Ryan Mason

Ryan Mason has been forced to retire

Sad news broke out on Tuesday that former Tottenham midfielder Ryan Mason had been forced to retire from football.

The 26 year old sustained a horrific injury to his skull during Hull’s 2-0 loss at Stamford Bridge last season.

Mason made one appearance for England in 2015 when he came on for the last 16 minutes against Italy in The Three Lions’ European qualifying match.

Mason was a quality player for Spurs and was a cult hero amongst many of the Tottenham faithful but in recent years, Spurs have become on of England’s best teams and their midfield is run by the likes of Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen, Mousa Dembele and even Harry Winks.

Therefore, Spurs sold Ryan Mason to Hull in the summer of 2016 much to the dismay of many Spurs fans.

Chelsea’s Gary Cahill clashed heads with Mason in an aerial challenge in January 2017 which left Mason with a broken skull.

Now, over a year on from the injury, Mason has retired due to the advice of medical professionals.

Mauricio Pochettino is a class act

After Tottenham’s incredible comeback on Tuesday night against Juventus, Mauricio Pochettinno revealed that Mason is welcome to come back to Spurs in a coaching capacity.

“Don’t worry Ryan, you’re going to be a successful person outside the pitch”

Pochettino’s kind gesture to Mason was the second brilliant football moment in as many days.

Former Arsenal player, Emmanuel Eboue, who has been suffering with depression, has been offered help by his former team-mates from Galatasaray.

It’s gestures such as these that prove that football isn’t just a self-absorbed millionaire’s game.
