Four Dog Food Products Recalled Over Salmonella Dangers for Pets and Humans

Over the past five days, four different pet food companies have recalled products due to concerns that their food is contaminated with salmonella.

This potential contamination doesn’t just pose a threat to the pets that eat this food, but also their human owners who handle the food.

Salmonella contamination symptoms are similar for both humans and animals, and include feeling lethargic, fever, body aches, nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramping and diarrhea.

According to the FDA, two people have picked up salmonella from the Raw for Paws product listed below. Typically a person or pet affected with salmonella experiences symptoms for 4 t0 7 days, which often clear up on their own. Hospitalization and medical treatment is occasionally required if the symptoms become too severe. To prevent the spread of salmonella from pet food to people, the FDA recommends washing your hands after handling your pet’s food.

If you have any of the products below in your home, you should stop feeding them to your pet immediately. If you or anyone in your family has come into contact with the affected products and are experiencing the symptoms noted above, see a doctor right away. Pets who have consumed these products and are showing symptoms of a salmonella infection should visit the vet, especially since animals can be a carrier of salmonella even if they appear healthy.
