Why is Michy Batshuayi playing so well at Dortmund?

Batshuayi scores again

Michy Batshuayi completed his loan move to Dortmund from Chelsea on deadline day in a bizarre deal which saw Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang sign for Arsenal and Olivier Giroud move across London from the EmIrates to Stamford Bridge.

Batshuayi has been brought in by Peter Stöger to replace Aubameyang and so far, he has done exactly that.

Aubameyang scored 22 goals for Dortmund this season before heading to North London. Batshuayi has scored 5 goals in 3 matches for BVB so far since arriving in January.

Even though the deal will only keep Batshuayi in Dortmund for another few months, it has already looked like an excellent piece of business.

The 24 year old scored a 91st minute winner in Dortmund’s Europa League fixture against Atalanta on Thursday night and is already the side’s 3rd top scorer despite playing just 3 matches.

What went wrong at Chelsea?

Chelsea signed Batshuayi from Marseille back in the summer of 2016. The Belgian striker had scored 23 goals and provided 10 assists during the 2015/16 season and was an obvious choice for any top side looking for a striker.

The Belgian was the main man in France after Dmitri Payet and Andre Ayew had both left the club at the beginning of the season to move to the Premier League.

At Chelsea, Batshuayi was always the second striker behind either Diego Costa or Alvaro Morata.

Even this season, when Morata was out with injury, Antonio Conte preferred to start Eden Hazard up front instead of the fellow Belgian.

Why the Dortmund system works

Former Arsenal striker Kevin Campbell believes that Batshuayi is back amongst the goals thanks to feeling ‘a little bit of love’ in Dortmund.

‘He is under less pressure than he was at at Chelsea’ according to Glenn Hoddle, a former Chelsea and England manager.

Dortmund are sure to look to make the deal a permanent one in the upcoming summer but surely whoever is Chelsea manager in 6 months time will be desperate not to let him go.
