Former Venezuela forward and ESPN pundit Alejandro Moreno has warned Toby Alderweireld against opting for a Manchester United move in the summer.

The Belgian played a central role in the past two Premier League campaigns for Tottenham Hotspur but injuries and disagreements with manager Mauricio Pochettino, who didn’t include him in the squad to face Juventus, has reduced him to just ten appearances this term.

His strained relationship with the Spurs boss along with Jose Mourinho’s intention to offload both Phil Jones and Chris Smalling in the summer has led to talk of a possible Old Trafford move.

But Moreno has noted that jumping ship to join up with Mourinho would be a bad move for Alderweireld.

“Some chance (of it happening), I just don’t know. I don’t think it’s happening,” he said.

“If you’re Spurs, at some point you have to stop being a seller of players. You have to say ‘you know what? We’re not going to get rid of (Harry) Kane, we’re not going to get rid of Alderweireld.

“If we want to achieve the things we want to achieve, we’ve got to keep our players’.”

United have been linked with the defender in the past and no supporter would turn their nose up at the chance to offload the chuckle brothers, who have notably lacked composure in recent defeats to Spurs and Newcastle United, in exchange for one of the best defenders in the Premier League.

But with midfield and left-back a primary concern ahead of the window, perhaps a more pressing question is this: why does Mourinho continue to use the aforementioned pair, along with Ashley Young, whilst the likes of Marcos Rojo, Victor Lindelof and Luke Shaw languish on the bench?
