Pundit Robbie Savage has called on Paul Pogba to step up for Manchester United and put his true talents on display in order to become the star of the team.
The Frenchman has been the topic of the press for the week with speculation that he’s fallen out with manager Jose Mourinho.
The Portuguese boss bizarrely substituted Pogba during the losses vs Tottenham and Newcastle and also dropped him for the win vs Huddersfield that was sandwiched between the two aforementioned fixtures.
Previously considered undroppable, Paul has suddenly seem himself get on the wrong side of Mourinho who has insisted that the speculation is all false.
Either way, Savage doesn’t focus on the rumours on a fall out and instead calls on the former Juventus man to perform as everyone knows he can.
According to the Daily Star, Robbie said to the Mirror: “I still like Pogba as a player and I still believe he can become the heartbeat of Manchester United’s midfield.
“Just like Old Trafford legends Roy Keane, Bryan Robson and Paul Scholes were before him. But we are at a pivotal moment in the club’s season. The FA Cup is United’s best bet for a trophy, and they have a tricky Champions League date with Sevilla next week.
“This is the time for the real Paul Pogba to stand up, influence big games, and make himself the first name on Mourinho’s teamsheet.
“At the moment, if Pogba is not in the side, would United miss his scoring power? Probably not. Would they miss his energy, his creativity, his set-piece expertise? Maybe – but there is plenty of that in the team.
“People are very quick to jump on Pogba’s case because he cost so much money but he is only one piece of a very expensive jigsaw. It’s time for Mourinho to fit the pieces together.”
Calls for Jose to put together a more fluid team have been increasing of late as pressure increases due to some poor results recently.
If United aren’t careful, they could suddenly find themselves in a top four scrap for Champions League football despite spending the majority of the season comfortably in second place.
For all of Manchester City’s excellence, the Red Devils’ inconsistencies have cost them greatly and they have allowed themselves to fall far behind their fierce rivals.
Jose Mourinho has insisted restoring the team to greatness and consistent form has nothing to do with what formation he uses or how he used Paul Pogba so it’s now up to him to prove that is the case.
