Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho was promised new signings by executive vice chairman Ed Woodward according to reports.

The Portuguese boss apparently had reservations of signing an extension to his current contract but was reassured by the club’s hierarchy that they would give him what he wants if he put pen to paper.

Mourinho delighted fans by extending his contract further but some pundits such as Jamie Redknapp questioned what he did to deserve more time at the club.

The former Real Madrid manager won the Europa League, Carabao Cup and Community Shield last season and has led his team to 2nd place so far this season.

The improvement in league form and return to Champions League football has led to United’s board believing he is the man to continue bringing the club more success.

According to Metro, The Sun report that Jose was promised four more signings in the summer with three defenders and a holding midfielder targeted.

The report technically makes sense as he has previously told the press that he has no interest in signing any attacking players in the summer transfer window.

Manchester United’s need for investment in defence has never been more clear than in recent matches but it’s something Jose Mourinho initially recognised when he first joined the club.

In his two seasons in charge the ‘Special One’ invested in two centre-backs in the form of Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof.

Unfortunately neither player has been a regular starter with the former struggling with injuries and the latter adjusting to his new surroundings.
