Manchester United legend Roy Keane has told Paul Pogba what he should do to improve after recent performances have seen him come in for criticism.
While the Frenchman wasn’t poor by any means, he was sub-par and below the high standards he’s previously set at the club.
Some sections of fans have insisted that Pogba’s displays have been due to tactical reasons and not of any fault of his own.
The debate about whether to play the former Juventus man in a three man midfield or a two man midfield has heated up of late with supporters calling for Jose Mourinho to drop the 4-2-3-1 formation in favour of the 4-3-3.
Keane though believes that the tactical aspect of it all has nothing to do with Paul’s recent form and has instead urged him to focus on other matters.
According to Express, Roy said on ITV Sport: “I think any top player in midfield should be able to play in a two or a three.
“So the guy just needs to do better himself and focus on what the game of football is all about.”
Roy Keane’s advice is easier said than done but it is part of the cause for Paul Pogba’s form and he will have to step it up in the upcoming fixtures.
A manager’s job is to bring out the best of his players and Mourinho has done that with several players in the current squad but the same can’t necessarily be said of the midfielder.
Pogba’s absolute best games can arguably be counted on one hand and most of them have come in a three man midfield which argues the case for the tactical switch.
At the same time, a player of his quality should be able to perform in a two man midfield, particularly since Nemanja Matic is doing a majority of the heavy defensive work.
All that Paul is being asked to do is to be tactically aware of his responsibilities and not to isolate the Serbian, which surely can’t be too difficult to do.
