Viewers of tonight’s FA Cup 5th-round clash between Wigan Athletic and Manchester City have taken to social media in their numbers to plead with the FA to hand a retrospective ban to Sergio Aguero.
Matchup
The two sides went head to head at the DW Stadium, with hosts Wigan coming into proceedings on the back of a pair of losses to Southend and Blackpool respectively.
Manchester City, meanwhile, continued their scintillating season form with a pair of drubbings in their last two outings, first versus Leicester (5-1), and then versus Basel (4-0).
1-0
Unsurprisingly, City were labelled as clear favourites ahead of kick-off this evening, with the strong starting lineup opted for by Pep Guardiola showcasing the fact that the Spaniard was not taking his side’s opponents lightly.
However, what unfolded over the ensuing 90 minutes at the DW Stadium proved yet again that no result in the FA Cup can be taken for granted, as a stoic showing from Paul Cook’s Wigan eventually saw the Latics emerge with a 1-0 win courtesy of a late strike from Will Grigg.
Incident
The aftermath of the clash saw the home crowd flood the DW pitch to celebrate a momentous victory with their players (and abuse the travelling Manchester City support), with security in the stadium quickly losing control of the situation.
And this shortcoming could prove extremely costly for Manchester City over the coming weeks, after Sergio Aguero was caught on camera lashing out at one of Wigan’s supporters:
Reaction
It remains unclear exactly what was said to Aguero, but, judging by his furious reaction, it seems likely that the Argentine hitman was subjected to a rather serious piece of abuse.
It should also be noted that Aguero’s outburst was more of a push than a punch.
Whatever the case may be, though, the South American should not have allowed his temper to get the better of him, with many immediately taking to Twitter to insist that the City star be suitably reprimanded over the coming days:
Just seen the Aguero incident, there is no way he can get away with that, surely? It’ll be interesting to know what caused that kind of reaction but he should know better

Arsène Wenger got banned for 3 matches for calling Mike Dean a “Disgrace”. Tonight, Aguero hit a fan and Pep was being aggressive to the referee and has a huge confrontation with Paul Cook in the tunnel. If Pep/Aguero escapes a ban then I’ll know there is favouritism from the FA

Aguero and Pep to get a ban please 👌🏼

Ban Aguero immediately @fa

Aguero should be given a lengthy, lengthy ban for his actions tonight. He may very well have been provoked, but that doesn’t warrant his attempt to punch the fan. #MCFC

Not much in that Aguero incident. Think one-match ban would be fine. Actually, make it two.
