Brilliant for Man City: Kevin De Bruyne has overtaken Leo Messi after Leicester

Manchester City beat Leicester 5-1

As if it was in any doubt, last weekend was the weekend that Man City won the 2017-18 Premier League.

The Sky Blues scored five times in a comfortable win over Leicester.

The writing was on the wall for Leicester after just three minutes when Raheem Sterling broke the deadlock.

Sergio Aguero stole the headlines going on to score foul goals. The Argentine is now up to 21 league goals: the same as Liverpool’s Mo Salah and two behind Tottenham’s Harry Kane.

Yet it was Kevin De Bruyne who stole the show and bossed the game. The Belgian registered a hat-trick of assists, while he’s now closing in on Thierry Henry’s 20 EPL assist record for the season.

‘Kevin De Bruyne overtook Leo Messi’

On Monday morning, the Times have revealed that Kevin De Bruyne has overtaken Leo Messi in one key stat after Leicester.

KDB now has better assist stats than the Barcelona superstar. The Times report:

That he set up three goals in City’s 5-1 hammering of Leicester City on Saturday meant that he moved ahead of Messi in one respect.

Since August 2012, when De Bruyne joined Werder Bremen, he has provided 77 assists in Europe’s top five leagues. Messi is one behind.

Looking down the list of top assist makers, Chelsea’s Cesc Fabregas is third on the list, while Arsenal’s Mesut Ozil is seventh.

Pep Guardiola has also suggested that De Bruyne will win the Ballon d’Or in the future. Asked about the Belgian scooping the top individual award in the future, the Man City boss said:

No doubt. It’s not just one game. It’s the whole season every three days playing that way. Every three days.
