The school shootings won’t stop. Hundreds of students will die in the coming decades at the hands of men who have easy access to guns and who have grown up in an age where violence is glorified in American culture. That’s the cynical view held by older generations who have seen policymakers at the federal, state, and local levels become wholly owned subsidiaries of the National Rifle Association (NRA). But many of the young people who survived this week’s massacre of 17 people at a high school in Parkland, Florida, still believe they can play a role in stopping what most Americans now view as inevitable. Parkland shooting survivors are sick of ‘thoughts and prayers’ “We can’t ignore the issues of gun control that this tragedy raises. A

Leeds want to sign this powerful forward, would be ideal for Heckingbottom's side - originally posted on Sportslens.com Leeds United will look to sign the Nigerian forward Jerry Mbakogu at the end of the season. The Championship outfit tried to sign the Carpi attacker last month but the Serie B side were not keen on losing a key player halfway through the season. Mbakogu is likely to cost around £3.5million and he will add some much-needed pace and power to Leeds’ attacking unit. The Nigerian has scored 6 goals so far this season and he is looking to guide his side to a promotion play-off place in Serie B. Mbakogu is looking to secure a dual Italian passport and once that is sorted, Leeds will be able to complete the transfer without any work permit issues. The Whites signed P...

Eight years ago it struck me that I was in the midst of a movie. At the time, I was reporting a PEOPLE “Hero” feature about a school created to save struggling students from the school-to-prison pipeline. Suspended or expelled for misdeeds under academic zero-tolerance policies, these kids in my St. Louis hometown — often traumatized by violent streets — risked winding up dead or in jail without ever collecting a high school diploma. Their fates illustrate the very real incarceration of America’s youth in startling numbers that disproportionately target Black teens. For a year I was in-and-out of Innovative Concept Academy and the lives of those it helped. But after the article appeared in PEOPLE in November 2011, I knew I wasn’t done. The stories were too intimate, too emotional, to live

The Daily Kos Elections Morning Digest is compiled by David Nir, Jeff Singer, Stephen Wolf, and Carolyn Fiddler, with additional contributions from David Jarman, Steve Singiser, Daniel Donner, James Lambert, David Beard, and Arjun Jaikumar. Leading Off ● IL-04: Wow. It's rare we ever say this, so you know we mean it when we tell you that this new TV ad from nonprofit director Sol Flores is a must-watch. The spot starts off prosaically enough: Flores, who narrates the ad herself, begins by saying, "My art teacher asked me why I was building a chest. I was 11." Footage recreating the scene ("1984 Chicago") rolls by, and at this point, perhaps, you might expect the box to be a metaphor for Flores' hopes, or maybe you're anticipating that the teacher said something dismissive. Campaign Act
