Player Ratings: Clinical Lukaku shines with Sanchez, United's best 2 players

Sergio Romero 6 – Didn’t need to make any monumental saves but gathered the ball with confidence throughout.

Ashley Young 6 – Once again frustrated with his shabby delivery into the box but generally held a good defensive position and moved along play nicely.

Victor Lindelof 6 – Looked slightly overwhelmed by Huddersfield’s ebullient start but steadily grew into the game, moving the ball up the pitch with precision.

Chris Smalling 7 – For all the criticism received during the week, this was a gutsy, no-nonsense performance at the heart of defence. A warrior inside the box from start to finish.

Luke Shaw 6 – Found himself overwhelmed by Huddersfield’s plan to overload Manchester United’s left hand side but, given the circumstances, composed himself well on the ball. Needed more help from Sanchez.

Michael Carrick 6 – Occasionally let Huddersfield players – Tom Ince in particular – get in behind him but delivered another calming, assured display on the ball.

Nemanja Matic 5 – In the face of Huddersfield’s energy, the Serbian found himself wanting in pace and agility, seemingly unable to attune himself to the pitch of the game. Did well to cover Shaw on the left after half time.

Scott McTominay 6 – His close control could have been more precise at times but his manager will be pleased with the confident way he circulated possession and found space.

Juan Mata 6 – Had a goal controversially overturned by VAR just before half time but that only appeared to spur him on, with the Spaniard’s manipulation of the ball giving the visitors greater control in the second half.

Alexis Sanchez 6 – The Chilean, somewhat uncharacteristically, didn’t see much of the ball – but when he did it was effective, most notably through an assist for Lukaku.

Romeu Lukaku 7 – A truly superb striker’s display. Started and finished both of Man United’s goals, popping the ball off to first Mata and then Sanchez before beating Huddersfield’s defence for pace and skill. That’s 21 goals and counting.
